Wheel alignment essentially involves measuring what is known as caster, camber, and toe, and adjusting each to make sure all four tires are pointing straight ahead and in alignment with each other.

In modern cars caster and camber no longer need to be adjusted. Toe is the measure of how far tires deviate from a straight ahead position, with positive toe meaning tires are pointed in and negative toe that they are pointing out.
